Santa Barbara — Living Sculpture by Ragnar Kjartansson

Art Performance

In 2021, the Russian art world saw the opening of Renzo Piano’s “GES-2,” a cultural center in Moscow run by the V-A-C Foundation. The building, which used to be a power plant, has been transformed into a space for exhibitions, music, theatre, and educational projects and has become one of Moscow’s most prominent cultural landmarks.

The highlight of the center’s first season was “Santa Barbara — Living Sculpture,” a performance art piece by Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson. Under Kjartansson’s direction, the Lorem Ipsum team produced, staged, and shot 100 episodes of the soap opera in 100 days. Each episode was shot in a single take, with actors working as if they were in a theatre. The sets, costumes, and props were identical to those used in the original serial.

The grandiose set features the mechanisms of the theatre and film industry functioning as a dynamic sculpture, synchronizing the past with the present and the future. Kjartansson’s “Santa Barbara” is also a reflection of the influence of fiction on history, modernity, and reality. The performance addresses the pervasiveness of fabricated events, the multiplicity of pseudo-realities, and all the signs of today’s mass media.

The Warmth of the Arctic

Temporary Exhibit

The exhibition “The Warmth of the Arctic,” which is devoted to the Yamal peninsula, is centered around a paradoxical contrast: Yamal is situated in the remote Arctic north, yet radiates warmth far beyond its geographic boundaries—both in a physical and metaphorical sense. The exhibition narrates the tale of this warmth in its various forms, including the oil and gas sector, the culture of the native northern peoples, and the past, present, and future of the region.

Post-War Period: From Catastrophe to Rebirth

Permanent Exhibit

The exposition “Post-War Period: From Catastrophe to Rebirth” explores the aftermath of World War II in Soviet history, where the glimmers of hope associated with its end quickly gave way to fear among Soviet Jews due to a wave of anti-Semitic repression. The Lorem Ipsum team crafted a narrative that interweaves the stories of notable figures from the Jewish intelligentsia of that time. The exposition features interactive museum technologies and immersive installations integrated into the historically recreated rooms. The Art Newspaper praised the exposition as “one of the most vivid and honest museum exhibits dedicated to the history of mass repressions in the USSR.”
